โ๏ธ The Pittsburgh Steelers Helmet Story
In 1962 the Steelers applied the Steelmark logo to one side of their gold helmets as a trial โ and liked the look so much they kept it one-sided forever, switching the shell to black in 1963. They remain the only NFL team with a logo on just one side of the helmet. The Steelmark itself comes from the American Iron and Steel Institute, honoring the city's steel industry.
๐ง Collector's Trivia
- Equipment manager Jack Hart was told to put the logo on only one side as a test โ the asymmetry became iconic.
- The three hypocycloids in the Steelmark represent the materials of steelmaking: yellow (coal), orange (ore), blue (scrap).
- Pittsburgh's six Lombardi Trophies are tied for the most in NFL history.
